Success Story

Faculty Development Grants

Due to the generosity of the grant program at MSU-CIBER I was able to attend the Third International Symposium on Agroterrorism in Kansas City, MO. The conference was presented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Heart of American Joint Terrorism Task force with support from ASIS International. I gained valuable information that has already been useful in my position at MSU and will be of benefit to our students.

William J. Holstein Speaks About "Why GM Matters"

The International Business Center at Michigan State University recently co-sponsored and co-organized a keynote address and fundraising luncheon entitled "Why GM Matters," at the MSU University Club. The program's featured presenter was William J. Holstein, author of Why GM Matters: Inside the Race to Transform an American Icon. Proceeds from the event benefit the 4th Annual Diversity Day Celebration to be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Eastern High School's Don Johnson Field House.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero introduced Holstein to an audience of more than 100 participants. The program was attended by GM representatives as well as UAW members and local officials. Mayor Bernero, who recently returned from a trip to Washington D.C. in which he was negotiating on behalf of Michigan's auto industry, welcomed Holstein and expressed his appreciation for his latest work. "You are sharing with America and the world why GM matters," Bernero said.

Holstein's address highlighted the crisis GM faces today in light of the national economic downturn and praised GM's ingenuity. He urged attendees to use the arguments contained in his book to win the argument in Washington D.C. about whether the federal government should further aide GM through supportive financial measures. "You have a battle on your hands," Holstein said. "The American people are not really behind you at this moment. It breaks my heart that that's the case. You need to start articulating what you've done," Holstein added.

William J. Holstein, an MSU alumni, is an award-winning author, journalist and editor. For the past 30 years he has concentrated on global business issues with a special interest in the automotive industry. He has written for numerous publications including, Business Week, The New York Times, U.S. News and Fortune. In addition to his recent publication, he has also authored Manage the Media and The Japanese Power Game.
