Broad College of Business Welcomes New Dean, Stefanie Lenway

The Eli Broad College of Business welcomed a new dean, Stefanie Lenway, in July. Dr. Lenway has always been an active supporter of global business education. She currently is an Academy of International Business (AIB) fellow and previously served as the organization's president. Part of her vision for the college is to expand global partnerships to develop new research programs and strategic alliances. Recently, she shared her vision in an interview with Heather Hill, Communications Director at the Broad School, who asked about Dr. Lenway's vision for the college.

"There are three main things I'd like to focus on, all of which will help the Broad School focus on the re-imagination of the state of Michigan's economy and how local companies can leverage global networks to become the new multinational corporations," Lenway said.

Lenway wants to create new partnerships in the Michigan business community to help students directly contribute to economic development through consulting projects, new product development and new venture creation. She would also like to further advance international opportunities.

"I'd like to continue the work that's been done to partner with business schools in key international markets to deliver new degree and non-degree programs through global strategic alliances that deliver new degree and non-degree programs," she said.

Lenway believes the global connections at Michigan State — including the Center for International Business Education and Research —have tremendous potential to build global programs to support research on the global dimensions of business.

She also would like to create even more partnerships with other colleges at MSU and use the work that's been done already to build a multidisciplinary sustainability curriculum.

"In general, I think we need to be giving students a more global perspective so they can build sensitivity to cultural differences and have a 'global mindset.' They need to understand the limits of markets and models and the importance of judgment, risk management, and the imperfections and incompleteness of mathematical models. And they need to be creative and innovative with the ability to apply multifunctional and multidisciplinary perspectives to ill-defined problems."€
