From the Executive Director

Greetings to all of our friends and colleagues in the business and educational communities!

This has been a very busy and productive summer for us at MSU CIBER. The Export Academy, our joint executive training program with MichCon, just graduated its first class; another group will complete the program in December. The feedback from participants has been very positive. Our faculty has been literally around the world conducting research, leading student study tours, teaching managers and establishing linkages. We have also participated in a few national academic outreach programs such as the FDIB Program that was competently organized by the University of Memphis CIBER. Closer to home, projects included a major conference on security issues in the multinational corporations offered with our school of criminal justice.

Business faculty also put the finishing touches on a new and innovative MBA curriculum which we'll offer Fall 1977. This program incorporates substantial global dimensions and achieves integrated curriculum.

Separately, in the new PIM (weekend MBA) program, a team of faculty is teaching the Strategy in the Global Environment course. New study tours are being planned for MSU MBAs in Mexico, Central Europe and elsewhere.

I will stop here as space limitations do not allow me to talk about all the new and ongoing projects! Nevertheless, I wanted to share with you the excitement I feel with this dynamic agenda as we enter a new phase, "Globalization: Beyond Internationalization," in the Broad College of Business at Michigan State University!

S. Tamer Cavusgil

Cavusgil named “John William Byington Endowed Chair”

S. Tamer Cavusgil, CIBER Executive Director, has been named the John William Byington Endowed Chair in Global Marketing at MSU.

The endowed chair was made possible by a substantial gift from John William Byington prior to his death in 1994. Byington was president of the Syndicated Services Division of The NPD Group Inc., one of the nation’s largest market research firms.

Cavusgil is widely recognized as a leader in international business education. He has authored over a dozen books and over one hundred refereed journal articles. He serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of International Marketing. Last April Cavusgil was also named “International Trade Educator of the Year” by NASBITE. Cavusgil also received the Ralph Smuckler Award for Advancing International Studies at MSU.

MSU CIBER receives redesignation

The U.S. Department of Education has announced that Michigan State University’s International Business Center will continue to be a national resource center for international business education.

As part of the designation, MSU will continue to promote the internationalization of curriculum, faculty and student programs, as well as assist local companies with the process of finding international markets.

“We are delighted with the federal government’s decision to continue to fund the CIBER program,” said James Henry, dean of the Eli Broad College of Business. “Our CIBER has established an enviable leadership position over the past six years.”

Since its designation as a CIBER in 1990, the International Business Center has secured external support exceeding $4 million from both the federal and private sectors. According to IBC executive director S. Tamer Cavusgil, its programs have been very successful. Not only is its CORE (Company Readiness to Export) software used by thousands of business executives, but also its Journal of International Marketing is widely considered the premiere publication in the field of international marketing management. Combined with other excellent programs and offerings, the IBC thinks it has found the formula for success:

“An excellent staff and administrative structure coupled with an ambitious work agenda enable us to pursue a comprehensive range of activities,” said Cavusgil. “The impact of our activities can be felt both on campus, as well as throughout the region and the nation.”

CLEAR elucidates language education

Upon receiving a competitive national resource center grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI program, MSU recently announced the formation of its Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR).

Headed up by co-directors Susan M. Gass and Patricia R. Paulsell, the center will promote collaboration in foreign language research and teacher education across college, departmental, and institutional boundaries.

Forum examines corporate security abroad

In May of 1996, the MSU CIBER and MSU School of Criminal Justice held a two day conference called “When Corporate and Culture Collide: The Challenge of Doing Business in High Growth Emerging Markets.”

Security managers from many multinational U.S. companies explored global corporate security issues such as local and organized crime, employee theft, corporate intelligence, and global information infrastructures. Examples and speakers from China, Brazil, India, Russia, and South America provided an intercultural experience.

Community colleges can add international flair to curriculum

In conjunction with several other institutions, MSU is pleased to announce that it will again host the International Business Institute for Community College Faculty. The 1997 Institute is scheduled to be held in May.

First held at MSU in 1995, this unique program attempts to help community college faculty and administrators provide their students with an internationalized curriculum. The conference focuses on adding a global perspective to current general business courses, as well as developing new courses that specifically emphasize international issues. The institute is cosponsored by CIBERs at The University of Chicago, University of Connecticut, Ohio State University, Purdue University, NASBITE and the Office of the Vice-Provost for University Outreach at MSU.

For more information on registering for this conference, please contact the MSU CIBER office at (517) 432-4320.

HED team promotes diversity

MSU’s Merchandising Management program in the College of Human Ecology has received the Excellent Progress in Achieving Diversity award for its outstanding efforts in internationalizing its teaching, researching and outreach missions.

The team was recognized for redirecting the curriculum to reflect factors affecting glo bal consumer markets, developing the international expertise of their faculty and enhancing its recruiting efforts of under-represented groups.

Team members included HED Acting Chairperson Linda Good, associate professors Patricia Huddleston, Brenda Sternquist and Dawn Pysarchik, assistant professor Karen Cummings, and secretary Judy Osbun.

Cyber CIBER: MSU web site garners awards

MSU’s CIBER web site received the Magellan 3-Star Site award, the Virtuocity Select Site award and the Gold Tiger Award, recognizing the resource as one of the top business-oriented web sites.

The site has also been featured in articles in PC World and PC Week.

According to site manager Tunga Kiyak, the site will undergo a major redesign with many new additions this fall.

Michigan executives complete export education program

On September 6, the MSU/Michcon Michigan Export Academy graduated seven executives from its "Great Exportations" program. A dinner ceremony for program participants was held at the East Lansing Marriott Hotel. Each graduate was presented with a certificate of completion from the Eli Broad College of Business.

Aimed primarily at medium-sized enterprises with an interest in internationalization, the program teaches executives how to successfully initiate and manage an export venture. Participants of the yearlong program attended six-hour workshops with lectures and guest speakers once a month. Executives were expected to complete various assignments regarding their companies and were assigned interns to assist in research.

Overall, the IBC is pleased with the success of the program and the positive response it has received. The IBC is currently recruiting participants for future classes. For more information call (517) 353-4336.
