Faculty Profile: Preet Aulakh

CIBER News is happy to profile Dr. Preet Aulakh, who recently completed his first year at MSU as an Assistant Professor of Marketing and International Business. Aulakh comes to MSU from Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada. Originally from India, he has degrees in mathematics and history from Panjab University, and a Ph.D. in Marketing and International Business from the University of Texas at Austin. His dissertation focused on control mechanisms in international marketing partnerships.

Dr. Aulakh currently teaches international business and international marketing at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels at MSU. His areas of specialization are electronic commerce and international licensing, cross-national strategic alliances, liberalizing economies, and foreign market entry. Dr. Aulakh’s recent publications include "Emerging Roles of Technology Licensing in Development of Global Product Strategy," and "Antecedents and Performance Implications of Channel Integration in Foreign Markets."

Asked why he chose to come to MSU, Aulakh responded "MSU has a great reputation for international business." He believes that MSU offers doctoral students an excellent place to study international business, with the ability to declare it as a minor, and opportunity to receive support from CIBER for their research. "I am really delighted to be part of this unique team at MSU," says Aulakh.

CIBER Supports CLEAR Summer Institutes

CIBER was happy to help sponsor two MSU Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) institutes this past summer. The first, held 27-28 June at MSU, was the Content-Based Instruction and Business Language Materials Development Conference. One of the breakout sessions was designed specifically for foreign language teachers who wished to concentrate on developing materials for content-based instruction in business and economics. CIBER supported two teachers interested in developing business-language related materials.

Also supported was the TAOS Institute for Language Teachers (TILT) held 20 July-1 August in Taos, New Mexico. Thirty-eight teachers from 15 states participated in this language instructor education institute, which offered special sessions on business language. Selected TILT participants will continue their work next summer with fellowship support from CLEAR and MSU’s CIBER. For more information, contact Co-Director Patricia Paulsell at (517) 432-2286.

MSU Offers 1997 Study Abroad Programs for Business Majors

On 25 September, the MSU Office of Study Abroad hosted the 1997-98 MSU Study Abroad Fair to introduce the overseas study programs available this year. The fair gave students a chance to meet with program professors, former program participants, and academic and financial aid advisors.

Students majoring in business at MSU now have several options available if they would like to take a semester abroad, yet be able to enroll in classes for their major at the same time. Currently MSU has business programs in Hungary, China, Mexico, and Thailand.

Spring semester 1998 in Hungary will feature the Business, Economics, and International and Public Affairs program at Budapest University of Economic Sciences. The program is taught in English, but allows students to study Hungarian language and culture, in addition to classes in business studies, economics, and international relations.

In Beijing, business students can be part of the program at Tsinghua University, a prestigious research and educational institution, known particularly for its programs in management, science, and engineering. Classes are also taught in English, although students can study Chinese language and culture as well. Specific business classes offered are Doing Business in China and International Trade.

Students wishing to study in Spanish may be interested in the program at ITESM in Queretaro, Mexico. Courses will be offered in business, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. The semester begins with a two-week intensive Spanish program, followed by a placement test.

And finally, this fall MSU began the Business Studies program in Thailand in partnership with Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Business classes offered are accounting, business concepts and ethics, management and organization, quantitative business analysis, and information technology/systems. MSU integrative studies credits are also offered there in calculus, economics, statistics, and society and culture.

For additional information about overseas programs, contact the Office of Study Abroad at (517) 353-8920.

CIBER-Funded Research Project Underway

MSU CIBER is proud to help fund a research project by Marketing and Supply Chain Management professors Dan Krause and Robert Handfield titled "A Cross-Industry, Cross-Country Comparison of Buying Firm’s Supplier Development Practices." Their study is aimed a t investigating firms’ supplier development practices in the automotive and electronics industries in the U.S., U.K., Korea, and Japan.

The project is truly international in scope. Since its inception, the professors have visited automotive firms in England and Wales, firms in both industries in Korea, and electronics firms in Scotland. U.S. site visits will continue throughout the fall, with a trip to Japan later this year. We wish them luck with the rest of the project.
