Conference on Globalization to be Held at MSU in April

On 3-4 April 1998, the "Globalization and its (Dis)Contents: Multiple Perspectives" conference will be held at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University. The conference is sponsored by MSU's Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID) and Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).

The Conference will open with a welcome from MSU president Peter McPherson, and will feature various presentations in the following areas:
- Clarifying Key Concepts
- Institutions and the Process of Globalization
- Culture as an Aspect of Globalization
- Globalization and the Environment
- Globalization and the Global South
- The Place of Business Enterprises in the Globalization Process
- Glocalization
- The Process and Future of Transnationalism
- The Future of Globalization

AMA International Marketing Faculty Consortium

On 11-15 July 1998, the American Marketing Association's Eighteenth Faculty Consortium on International Marketing will be held on the campus of Michigan State University. The event is hosted by MSU's Center for International Business Education and Research and Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management. Cosponsors include the CIBERs at Purdue University, Texas A & M University, the University of Chicago, the University of Connecticut, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Memphis. Other sponsors include The American Marketing Association Foundation and The American Marketing Association's Global Interest Group.

MSU CIBER Supports Faculty Conference Participation

MSU CIBER was happy to support Dr. Amy Hillman's recent attendance at the 17th Annual International Conference of the Strategic Management Society in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Hillman, an Assistant Professor of Management at MSU, participated in and chaired a symposium on corporate governance structures across countries and effects on firm performance. Hillman's primary research interests are in international strategic management and corporate governance.

Plenary sessions with speakers from the business community, including Peter Job (Chief Executive of Reuters International), Pedro Luis Uriarte (CEO of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya), Kees Storm (Chairman of the Executive Board of Aegon), Kevin Coye (McKinsey and Company), and Norbert Walker (Chief Economist of Deutsche Bank Group), began the interactive conference and were followed by presentations and symposiums by members of the academic community and other practitioners from over 30 different countries.

The conference was organized around the theme "Managing in an Interconnected World" and drew over 700 participants from academia and business organizations across the globe.


Shakunage Cultural Foundation Establishes New Website

The Shakunage Cultural Foundation, an East Lansing-based non-profit corporation, recently announced that its website is on-line and accessible. This website is designed to provide information about Japan, and Michigan's Sister State of Shiga Prefecture, to those who have an interest in Japan.

The site, at http://www.shakunage.org, may be helpful to those doing business in Japan, or those who may be planning to do so in the future. The interactive site provides information on a wide variety of topics pertaining to Japanese life for those travelling to Japan, as well as information on classes offered at the Culture Center, including courses in Japanese language and culture, swordsmanship, and calligraphy. Activities from the cultural awareness program and information on scholarships and grants are also listed on the site.

New Issue of JIM Published

The latest issue of the quarterly Journal of International Marketing was recently published by Michigan State University Press. Selected articles include:

MSU Professor Publishes International Retailing Book

Brenda Sternquist, MSU Professor, Human Environment and Design, recently completed International Retailing, a book about the internationalization of retailing. In it, she addresses the areas of international culture and human behavior, retailing in developing countries, licensing and strategic alliances, and multinational retailing. Markets covered in greater detail include retailing in North America, Europe and Asia, addressing specific countries in each area. The book concludes with a chapter on the regionalization and internationalization of retailing.
